Suggestions for Solutions

Hi delegates! As BMUN grows nearer, I wanted to offer some advice on your solutions and what our dais expects for committee!  Before diving into the different types of solutions we are hoping to see in committee, I wanted to take this opportunity to revisit our learning goals and expectations for research in hopes that your solutions end up addressing these key points:  [include 4-7 learning goals or expectations for your committee (general or topic specific, but be sure to separate the lists if they’re topic specific]   - Environmental Justice →  A Human Right (Water, Air & Food) - Talking about current sensitive topics with respect & care - Researching topics using accurate and relevant sources  - Creating feasible and realistic solutions for the environmental injustices the committee is faced with   …  Please keep these learning goals in mind when forming solutions! They are key points we want you to address!  Need stepping off poi...

Public Speaking Tips

Hi delegates!  As we continue counting down the days to BMUN 72, I wanted to provide some advice on speeches and speaking in general.  First, and most importantly, breathe and have fun with it! I understand how scary it can be to speak in front of others, but we're all here to learn together. Your speech doesn't have to be the most perfectly polished to be good---we're looking for meaningful research that relates to and aligns with your countries' stances on the topics at hand. Use that knowledge and apply it to new solutions. Just try to be confident and remember to practice, practice, practice!  When you're speaking, remember to project your voice and enunciate clearly so you are understandable to everyone in the audience. Try not to be monotone and speak with varied intonation. Don't be afraid to be creative! We love well-researched speeches, but that doesn't mean it has to be boring. Try out different hooks and endings to your speeches to be engaging. ...

Topic A Updates

Hey delegates!  Considering the current situation in Gaza, we wanted to help provide some information as to how that is affecting the Water Crisis in the region. Hence, we have written an update paper(linked here ) recognizing how the topic has changed and what we consider to be starting points for any last minute research. If there are any questions, reach out at unsc72@bmun.org and we will try to get back to you as soon as we can!  Best, Vernika

Procedure and Committee Flow

Hi Delegates! I wanted to check in with you to provide some more insight to how our committee is going to work at BMUN 72. UNSC will be using Standard BMUN Procedure with a few modifications. Our committee will begin by setting the Agenda and Topic for Topic B followed by a vote. This will be decided through a round-robin debate. Once the Agenda is set, we will open a running Speaker’s List (standard speaking time is 1 minute, 30 seconds) and those speeches will be followed by 2 30-second comments by other delegates. This is the default timing for the Speaker’s List and can be amended if agreed upon by the committee. The Speaker’s List can also be interrupted by Moderated Caucuses and Informal Caucuses that give delegates the opportunity to exchange opinions on policy, solutions, and more specific aspects of the topics at hand. In our committee, our dais plans on leaving the flow of committee up to you delegates, so we suggest you come prepared with specific subtopics and polici...

Position Paper Tips

Hi delegates! Just wanted to check in and offer a bit more guidance on your position papers. As a reminder, UN Security will be using a different Position Paper format detailed in the UNSC page on the BMUN website ( https://www.bmun.org/committees/unsc ) . This is because the second topic is Open Agenda, and rather than having you write position papers on each of the potential topics, we would like to see you all start working towards creating arguments on which ones are most pressing at this time! Besides the general format, we wanted to offer some tips on the research process and the formation of your paper.  Research The biggest favor you can do for yourself in the writing process is to really apply time and effort into understanding the topics beforehand. Luckily, your generous dais has written the key to beginning this process: your synopsis! Not only do we recommend reading this synopsis, but we hope that you will interact with it. Ask questions, make connections, ref...

SMART Resolutions

Hi delegates! BMUN is just around the corner, so I wanted to revisit the pinnacle document of committee: your resolutions! Before we get into the details of your resolutions, the format and jargon about resolutions can be quite confusing (boooo), but don't worry! BMUN has a Resolution Structure document, linked here , that covers all the teeny tiny details of these papers.  When turning your solutions into operative format, we want you to keep the SMART goals in mind: S - Specific , what exactly is this operative trying to achieve? M - Measurable , how will you know when this operative is successful? Are there any specific points that will make this solution more quantifiable? A - Attainable , is this solution genuinely possible? Is that clear in your operative? R - Relevant , will this operative positively contribute to solving this problem? T - Timely , when do you expect to achieve this solution by? Are these time-constraints reasonable? When in doubt, refer back to the S...

Welcome Post + Expectations

Image
Hi delegates! We are so excited to welcome you to BMUN 72 and the United Nations Security Council [UNSC] committee. In this committee, you will be learning about how environmental injustice has a severe impact on the health and well-being of people in the Gaza Strip. Our goal is to humanize those who are impacted in the region regardless of political connotation and we ask that you respect one another when talking about topics that impact human beings regardless of region and place. Our first topic addresses the Water Crises in Gaza. Our second topic is Open Agenda but you are welcome to use any of the three topics we discuss in our Background Guide to write your position paper.  This blog will act as our committee’s more informal avenue for discussion and communication before the conference– and we’d love to see you interact with it! The purpose of this blog is to (1) allow you to actively engage with the content of this committee and (2) give you all the opportunity to lear...
